Male Impotence

There are lots of people who have male impotency or erectile dysfunction. It is important for men to seek guidance to improve their relationships and sexual experience. High blood pressure, diabetes, depression, heart problem, nervous system disorders and other such problems can contribute to erectile dysfunction. It can be due to side effect of some medications. It can appear as symptom of other disorders in some men as well. Premature ejaculation is often thought to be ED. The entire process of sexual arousal, erection and ejaculation can occur very quickly in premature ejaculation and it normally takes few minutes or even few seconds. The partner remains unsatisfied. There can be erection problems like ED as well with premature ejaculation but it is treated differently. The role of the partner is very critical in this ED problem in men.   • Complex processes take place in the body of man to get an erection.
    • Peripheral nervous system, stress related factors, central nervous system, psychological factors, hormonal and vascular factors are involved in the erection. Only single component of the complex process is represented by penile portion of process.

    • There can be erection due to smell, touching and visual stimuli triggering pathways in the brain and these information are then transferred to the base of spine from brain. The primary fibers are connected to the penis at the nerve centers and these nerves can regulate blood flow during erection.
    • Chemicals are released during sexual stimulation from nerve endings in penis with which different triggers occur causing muscles relaxation in erection bodies. The blood flow in the penis is controlled by smooth muscles. The erection become full and rigid when blood flow is increased due to smooth muscles.
    • There can be detumescence if there are no chemicals releases. The smooth muscles regain muscle tone due to ejaculation in erection bodies due to which venous drainage channels are opened from the penis.
  • It is common for men to have sexual dysfunction.  
    • About 52% of men aged between 40 and 70 years are reported to have erectile difficulty problems. The men will have inability to achieve or maintain erection in this problem. 10% of men can have nocturnal erections.
    • It is estimated that about 18 to 30 million men are affected by the erectile dysfunction.
    • Men can also have other male problems like loss of libido and premature ejaculation. 17% of men are affected by ED due to anxiety and 8% men don’t have pleasure during sexual activity.
